Diatomaceous Earth is an effective potting mix component as it retains fertiliser and water against leaching resulting in reduced costs whilst promoting vigorous plant growth. It is a natural source of plant-available silicon, an essential plant nutrient. The highly absorbent porous Diatomaceous Earth can act as a slow-release carrier of nutrients and water.

Diatomaceous Earth is hydrophilic and significantly decreases the risk of desiccation of the potting mix during hot weather periods reducing plant stress. In nursery production the addition of Diatomaceous EarthE to the growing medium of potted plants provides a very effective water retention system
